The Mystery of Death, the Meaning of Resurrection
How did people in the world of the first Christians confront death and experience grief? Did Greeks and Romans have hope for life after death? The course will draw upon Greek and Latin tombstone inscriptions and grave stele as reflections of attitudes. Special attention will be devoted to texts such as 1 Thess. 4:13-18; 1 Cor. 15, Mark 16; Matthew 28; Luke 24; John 20-21, but also to early Christian art (mostly on sarcophagi in the Vatican).
