Be Ready to Serve

by Miriam Kettlehake

And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to the promise.

–Galatians 3:29

Many people today enjoy using Ancestor.com to find their family tree and learn more about their history. The Jewish people already knew this as we read all the names of Jesus’ early family in the first chapter of Matthew. We know Joseph, the husband of Mary, was descended from Abraham, and of the lineage of David. We are also told that he planned to dismiss her quietly when she was found to be with child before they were married. The Advent season is the last trimester, with the unborn child growing and moving. How different Mary’s life would have been if Joseph had not chosen to stand by her and provide for her. We, too, may be called to go out of our comfort zone and provide care-giving support for someone who is not in a good place and with whom we may not be comfortable.

Joseph listened to the Angel of the Lord who told him not to be afraid, but to proceed with the marriage and be Jesus’ earthy father. So too, may God the Father direct our path as caregivers in today’s world. There are many ways we can serve God’s people. The gamut runs from providing food and clothing to the Pantry, visiting the prisoners through the prison ministry, relieving the caregivers in their homes who are worn out, supporting the Haiti ministry and praying for each other. As we look around us at the needs of our world, let us listen to the Angel of the Lord who directs us to serve and “be not afraid.” We can then be heirs to the promise.

Prayer:
Speak to us, Lord, as your angels spoke to Joseph. Reassure us that you are with us and direct us to serve those who need our prayers and our support. Amen.
