A Special Day at Epiphany Lutheran Church

Bishop EatonOn Sunday, July 31, we will be honored and blessed to have the Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) proclaim the good news here at Epiphany Lutheran Church. Bishop Elizabeth Eaton will preach at two special services – 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. -at our Far Hills Campus. In the fifty-seven-year history of Epiphany, this will be the FIRST time the presiding bishop of the national church will be here.

The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton was elected as the ELCA’s fourth presiding bishop at the 2013 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. Born in Cleveland on April 2, 1955, Eaton earned a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., and a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio.

Ordained June 4, 1981, Eaton served as assistant pastor of All Saints Lutheran Church in Worthington, Ohio; interim pastor of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Boardman, Ohio; and pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Ashtabula, Ohio. She was elected bishop of the ELCA Northeastern Ohio Synod in 2006 and re-elected in May 2013. Eaton is married to the Rev. T. Conrad Selnick, an Episcopal priest, and they are parents of two adult children, Rebeckah and Susannah. She is a gifted speaker and strong Lutheran theologian.

Bishop Eaton is coming back to Ohio the last weekend in July to preside at the wedding of Anastasia Peltomaa (our Director of Children’s Ministries) and Clint Rodgers. Anastasia is the daughter of two pastors who are both good friends of Bishop Eaton, and Clint attended Messiah Lutheran Church in Ashtabula where Bishop Eaton served. We contacted her and asked if she would be willing to preach, and she graciously accepted.

So we can properly celebrate on July 31, our worship schedule will be altered:
  • Saturday, July 30, 5:30 p.m. at Far Hills Campus – regular worship
  • Sunday Morning Services, July 31 at Far Hills Campus – 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. ONLY
  • NO services at Austin Campus

We will incorporate music from both our traditional and praise services, and invite ALL members and guests to join us for this wonderful day. ALL are welcome!
