What Verse Will Help You Face Today?

Psalm 34

Praise for Deliverance from Trouble

Of David, when he feigned madness before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.

I will bless the Lord at all times;

    his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul makes its boast in the Lord;

    let the humble hear and be glad.

O magnify the Lord with me,

    and let us exalt his name together.

I sought the Lord, and he answered me,

    and delivered me from all my fears.

Look to him, and be radiant;

    so your faces shall never be ashamed.

This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord,

    and was saved from every trouble.

The angel of the Lord encamps

    around those who fear him, and delivers them.

O taste and see that the Lord is good;

    happy are those who take refuge in him.

O fear the Lord, you his holy ones,

    for those who fear him have no want.

10 The young lions suffer want and hunger,

    but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

11 Come, O children, listen to me;

    I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12 Which of you desires life,

    and covets many days to enjoy good?

13 Keep your tongue from evil,

    and your lips from speaking deceit.

14 Depart from evil, and do good;

    seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous,

    and his ears are open to their cry.

16 The face of the Lord is against evildoers,

    to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears,

    and rescues them from all their troubles.

18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted,

    and saves the crushed in spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,

    but the Lord rescues them from them all.

20 He keeps all their bones;

    not one of them will be broken.

21 Evil brings death to the wicked,

    and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.

22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;

    none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.

The title of the psalm is one that catches the eye, yes? There may be times when we want to feign madness to flee from our troubles (sometimes that is closer than we wish). Yet God provided delivery for David even in the darkest of times.

My first job out of college was in the business office at an engineering firm. My supervisor was a good person to work with on most days, but when it was a BAD day, we all knew it. We learned that whatever mood she came in the door with was the mood for the day. I remember one day when she came into the office with a spring in her step and a smile on her face. She said she heard her favorite song on the radio on the way in, “You Lost That Loving Feeling” by the Righteous Brothers, and it made her day. It’s kind of a strange song to put a spring in your step, now that I think about it. We considered calling the radio station and requesting it every morning!

What about you? What sets the tone of the day for you? I invite you today to choose a verse from today’s psalm as a mantra for the day or for the week. What verse will help you face today? What verse will be an inspiration to meet the week to come?

Maybe print it out and put it on the refrigerator. I know I will see it several times if I put it there! Or, put it on your computer screen or someplace that will remind you.

There are words of comfort, but also words of challenge and direction. In these words, I hear the sound of a loving parent, who provides care and love for the child, but also wants the child to do what is right and honorable and good. There are words of wisdom to be found.

What word speaks to you today? How will that carry you in the week to come?

Let us pray:

Thank you, Loving Father, for this new day, and this new week. Bless my words and actions, that they may bring honor to you. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
